For Linguists:

Terminology

BioMedical Translations, Inc. uses the industry accepted terminology, as per the ASTM standard for translation services providers (ASTM F2575-06 Standard guide for quality assurance in translation). Please take a moment to go over the following definitions. We also recommend that you review the ASTM standard itself, found at the link above.

Translation - the initial conversion of the source text into the target language.

SME editing - editing by a Subject Matter Expert. Editing includes comparing the document against the source text, checking for omissions and accuracy and ensuring that the technical terminology is current, consistent and correct. The end product should be a technically accurate and complete translation.

Linguistic review - editing by a professional linguist, with focus on grammar, spelling, syntax and omissions. Linguistic reviewers must also compare the translation against the source text. However, as the third linguist in the process, the reviewer should not need to check technical terminology or style. The end product should be a final, client-ready translation, that is fluent and native-reading.

Galley review - a final review of the formatted translation, checking that the formatting and layout match the source document, hyphenation adheres to that language’s rules, and that the text was correctly transferred during the formatting process. Galley review is performed by the last linguist to work on the project, usually the linguistic reviewer. The galley reviewer should not need to make textual changes at this point.

Certification - a document, provided by BioMedical Translations, Inc., which states that you, as a native speaker of the target language and professional linguist, believe that the translation is true and accurate. Certifications are signed by the final linguist (usually the Linguistic reviewer).
